Abstract

COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the world and its economic and social effects have been felt across geographies. This had unprecedented implications on organisational functioning particularly due to social distancing for employee safety. Hence, human resource management function was faced with enormous challenges such as preparing rolling rosters of employees for different days/shifts, sanitisation of the premises for those in essential services, evolving new work norms for working from home, and providing enabling environment for a virtual workplace to every employee whether skilled or otherwise. While training people to work on different platforms, they were expected to deal with anxiety and stress of employees and their families, and counsel those who became covid positive or unfortunately lost their near or dear one. Besides, HR was responsible for taking care of labour with meagre resources and maintaining a balance between organisational productivity and employee cost. Additionally, HR was expected to engage employees and keep their morale high in an uncertain environment.
